Why are people so shallow when they read??

This has become more and more apparent over the last few years... We as a whole are getting more and more incapable of grasping deep concepts in literature anymore. Anything that is not 100% surface deep is being overlooked by the vast majority. It really is puzzling to me. For example... my friend is getting her master's degree right now, and she is in the stage of getting the right Thesis. It is a simple example with a deep meaning.

(Example Thesis)You can play a great song such as Stairway to Heaven with great fervor and capture the attention of the audience, but is that all they are hearing?

Now that is not her statement, but it is similar in structure. She submitted this to her professor and classmates who critique it, and what do they come up with? "Well what do you mean when you say fervor? How does that capture the attention of the audience? Could you describe the song a little better?" These are all the style of comments that the PROFESSOR said were of great quality!!!! EVERYONE!!!! EVERY single one of these "intellectual" or "intelligent" people missed the point COMPLETELY! It has nothing to do with how you capture the audience! It has nothing to do with how you played the song! It’s about the deeper meaning of the song, what does the captured audience take away from hearing you play.

It is seriously how literature is approached of late. We don't want to work to understand the real meaning, or what the writer was truly getting at. It just feels like a waste of time to this current intellectual structure. Depth is being slowly abandoned just like logic was abandoned all those long years ago. It truly saddens me.

All that to say, check to make sure you don't fall into the same trap that all these dummies do. Make sure you keep your minds sharp and reverse this trend.

*Edit - I myself am guilty of this too... It is something I am working on...
